Baby. Up close and personal.

Karalynn,
You are pretty much always in my face. You are a momma's girl like none of the other kids were. You are always. right. here. So tonight, I tried to capture it and treasure it. Because I know it won't be forever.

ps. I did not touch the color of your eyes with my magic computer dust. They really truly are that beautiful.

Summertime 1

Summertime means playing DS, building lots and lots of Lego contraptions, getting lost in the world of Angelina Ballerina, and torturing our siblings who are trying to do all of the above. But Ms. Cute gets away with it all.

Austin Trip 2011

Dear Kids,

Two weeks ago Mom and Dad made a Big Escape.  Auntie Noel came to play with you all weekend long and Mom and Dad flew away on a jet plane to Austin, TX to chill with your Uncle Mick and Aunt Denise.  It was pretty much totally awesome.

First we went to this really cool section of town "Congress" I think it was called.  We went to this amazing western wear store that somehow combined Bohemian Chic with Western Cool.  It was pretty amazing to see.  We learned that in Texas, everyone and I mean everyone, even your almost-cool Uncle Mick, owns a pair of cowboy boots and at least one awesome western shirt to wear to nicer events.  Like backyard bbq's.

I must confess, it made me want a pair of chic cowbow boots myself.  Like desperately, like so much so that I didn't even try a pair on because I might not have taken them off.

And this was Daddy's look while I begged for my first pair of chic cowboy boots.  Recognize it?

After tearing ourselves away from the bling and the leather, we made it to an awesomely fabulous vintage shop.  Mick found a "fez" which apprently he's been searching for for years.  Since the brotherhood clubs are pretty much going out of business, they are pretty hard to find.

You probably don't even know what that is.  It used to be that men would get together in "fraternal organizations" like the Brotherhood of the Moose, Knights of Columbus, etc.  They would do a few service projects a year, ride their cool cars or motorcycles in parades with their cool hats, and generally hang out and drink in their clubs.  But you hardly ever see them any more.  Luckily I now know what do be on the lookout for for Uncle Mick's birthday.

Then Uncle Mick and Aunt Denise took us to this awesome cupcake store, Sugar Mama's.  It was wonderful.  And this is where I took my one and only picture of Aunt Denise.  Unfortunately it wasn't flattering, her eyes are wide and she's shoving in a scrumptious cupcake.  Basically even though the shot is technically perfect, Daddy won't let me post it.  So just imagine there's an image here of your beautiful Aunt Denise delicately nibbling on a beautiful cupcake.

Later that night we went to see Esther's Follies, which is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen.  It's a mix of skits, musical comedy, magic, and just plain fun.  Their best skit of the night was an Obama campaign speech mimicing the Old Spice commercial that I posted awhile ago.  Seriously, I almost peed.  A total riot and I'm so glad we went.

While sight seeing on the street after the show, we went through a crosswalk and BAM! there was the capitol.  On our way back, I checked my settings, ran to the middle of the road, snapped the shot, and ran the rest of the way across.  I'm sure everyone thought I was nuts but I was practically dancing because I had nailed the shot.

Finally, right before we flew out the next day, Uncle Mick and Aunt Denise took us to the "County Line".  Only the best BBQ meal I have ever eaten in my entire life.  Children you will soon learn that the only thing I love more than travelling is sharing meals, really good meals, with people I love.  This meal goes on my top 10 list.

Kids, I know you love your Uncle Mick.  He's a pretty fun uncle that's up for anything and loves to take you swimming and plays video games with you whenever you want.

Do you know that I love your Uncle Mick?  He's my big brother and has always excelled at the job.  He's wonderfully over-protective, someday I'll tell you the story of his phone call when he learned I was so quickly engaged to your Daddy.

He listens well and is always ready with any advice you might want (or even not want) to hear.  He was vitally important to my music education and has always answered well my questions about the history of music and movies and social systems and how they all tie together. I know without a doubt that because he and Auntie Noel went to college, that's why I went.  That's why I didn't even question IF I would go but merely where.  And looking back over my life, I cannot imagine how different I would be if I had merely stayed in Sedona, working at restaurants and partying on the weekends.  YUCK.  Thank God for Uncle Mick.

New Toy

Dear Kids,
It's true. Mommy got a new toy. I always get the best toys. It's cause I got the best Honey. He's the bomb.

First I tried it out in the backyard and got a few of these...

Then I remembered Grampa's request for a new photo of Marcus. While he was dressed up last Sunday, we checked out a new location. The miracle of these pictures is that they were shot at 12:30 in the afternoon. Full Sun!! But the shade of the new spot allowed for some great photos.

So much fun! Marcus, you are such an awesome model. As long as I let you do some karate shots, you also give me some great "cute" shots too.

Boy oh boy, you are getting big! In a few of those shots, I see my green eyes and freckles. In a few I see my brothers, Mick and Dan. And still in others, I see my Dad. You are made up of some pretty awesome DNA, Mr. Marc.

True Dat

I haven't posted in a bit.  But you can watch this movie and it pretty much sums up our life. I've watched it twice in 5 minutes. It's pretty much like therapy.

Our Year of the Family

Dear Fam,

This month I read an article in the Ensign about "Teaching the Doctrine of the Family".  I felt the strong impression that we needed to really focus on learning about the Family, its purpose, and how we can be stronger as a family unit.

So here's our plan.  We are studying the Family Proclamation.  Actually we are memorizing it, one paragraph a month for the rest of 2011.  One of the paragraphs is really, really long so we are going to split that one in two.  But we've already memorized the first paragraph and it's so awesome.  You guys are pretty incredible at that.

We are also taking the important principles (faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities), and one at a time they will be our family theme for an entire month.  Mostly that means we are studying it every week for family home evening.  It's on our garage door as well, vinyl sticker, and we try to talk about it often.

Our first family home evening this month was awesome.  We learned about the story of Samuel the Lamanite , and about how he had to have a lot of faith to return to preaching when he had already been thrown out of the city.  So we "threw" Daddy out of the living room and when he returned and started preaching on the "city wall" (our ottoman), we pelted him with "rocks" (marshamallows).  It was pretty awesome.

Having the monthly theme has really helped keep us on track with Family Home Evening and it's pretty much blessed us in a ton of ways.  The "work" month probably won't be so fun but I can bet "wholesome recreational activities" will be a blast.

Love you guys.  You are my family.  And you are my everything.

Reunion sneak peek

Dear kiddoes,

About last summer, we received an email from Aunt Darla that she wanted to host a family reunion in Salt Lake City.  The weekend before Christmas.  Seriously.  But still it sounded like a ton of fun so I talked with Daddy.  Come to find out that weekend would be his busiest 4 days in a whole 3 month period.  It would mean me driving by myself with a newborn, a toddler, and two boys, all the way to SLC and Dad would fly up on Thursday night.  Maybe.

I kindly responded that we would love to come but it would take a miracle.  Aunt Darla responded that she believed in miracles and would pray for one.  Then your Aunt Tanya and Aunt Jaime went to work on me.  Basically they convinced me that with their help, it would be a piece of cake and I didn't have one excuse left.

It actually took a few miracles but it ended up the most amazing family reunion ever and I am so grateful we were able to go.  Your aunts are pretty amazing, Uncle Nick was a strong shoulder to lean on, and everything worked out amazingly well.

Within three weeks of the reunion, Uncle Brent passed away.  But it was okay.  It was more than okay.  It was the way it was meant to be.

I'm currently in the process of making an entire book about it for our family.  But here are a few pictures for a sneak peek.

Got Family?  We do.
